Focus Forward with Intention: Wellbeing and Social Justice

Understanding and preventing compassion fatigue is critical to advancing equity and to promoting the wellbeing of educators, students, families, schools, and communities. We must intentionally invest in ourselves as we invest in our students and sustain educational excellence in uncertain times. Sustainable self-care and community care are essential to our work as educators, especially as we advocate and focus on teaching and learning of diverse languages and cultures. Blending culturally diverse and global perspectives, personal narratives, interdisciplinary research, poetry, and best practice recommendations, Dr. Shankar- Brown will illuminate different dimensions of wellness in the context of compassion fatigue. Research demonstrates that educational professionals, particularly individuals working in low-income communities and with students affected by trauma are more likely to experience compassion fatigue, along with higher mental, social-emotional, and physical health issues. This presentation will illuminate signs of compassion fatigue, effective approaches to navigate and prevent compassion fatigue, strategies to replenish and cultivate resilience, and a deeper understanding of intersectional connections to equity and social justice. Let us individually and collectively replenish as we focus forward to advance equity and to amplify the positive impact of our work. Let us prioritize wellbeing and renew our spirits as we teach languages and cultures, build inclusive learning environments, and sustain educational excellence in uncertain times!
